Treatment of a posterior mandibular edentulism without bone grafting using a subperiosteal implant
In this video, the patient lost the posterior mandibular teeth on one side. Bone resorption following the extractions resulted in insufficient bone above the inferior alveolar nerve. This lack of bone contraindicates the placement of conventional cylindrical implants screwed into the bone without performing complex bone grafting in this area.
Subperiosteal implants are placed on the bone surface while respecting vital anatomical structures. They are custom-made and 3D-printed in titanium, allowing them to perfectly adapt to the patient’s bone anatomy. The implants are fixed using titanium screws anchored into strong and favorable bone structures.
Their excellent stability allows them to support a provisional fixed screw-retained bridge immediately at the end of the surgery. In this case, a subperiosteal implant is combined with a cylindrical implant screwed into the bone in the anterior area where more bone is available. This combination is not mandatory, and the subperiosteal implant can also be used alone.
Within a few months, their biocompatible surface allows the bone to grow over them, further increasing their stability and strength.
